An Open Letter to Naomi Osaka

Isn’t it astounding how the media can expect more consideration from your life than you’re allowed to give yourself?

I must admit, outside of Venus and Serena Williams, I wasn’t familiar with other tennis players. I enjoyed playing the sport, but never had the opportunity to truly get into it. With that being said, you have become an inspiration to me and I’ve never even watched you play.

When you refused to talk to the media and took the fine instead, that was your line in the sand, so to speak. You even went as far as to explain why you made the decision you did, and it was still held against you. Sometimes we have to decide what we’re willing to sacrifice in order to stand on what we know is right.

When you decided your mental and emotional health was more important than any match you could win, I, along with much of the country cheered you on and supported you. It wasn’t simply about the defiance to the media, but it was you honoring yourself, and what you needed in that time.

If we’re to be honest, that’s a decision we should all make. I’ve struggled with PTSD for many years and while I’m a major advocate for mental health and wellness, there aren’t many I’ve shared that information with. I’m not sure if it was the stigma I didn’t want attached to me or simply the uneasiness of being so open about something so private.

In looking at the sacrifice you made for your own wellness, I can’t help but wonder how many times I’ve put the expectations of others in front of my own well-being. How many times did I give in instead of honoring myself?

While my life isn’t in the limelight, and for that reason I get some reprieve, I can understand your personal battle. And sometimes it’s exhausting to fight, but giving up isn’t an option.

I can’t imagine what it’s like to walk in your shoes. Admired by the world, but they have no idea of your struggle. They look at the fame and the opportunities and think you have it all together, but no one has it all together.

So I thank you for showing up and being your authentic self. Thank you for showing up and being vulnerable and honest about your human experience. Thank you for reminding us that this journey is so much more than our gifts and talents. Our journey is also about learning to love ourselves the way we so freely love others. Our journey is about healing and growing and deciding what principles we stand on, even when we must sacrifice to stand on them.

Thank you for reminding me of the healing power of honesty and vulnerability. You’ve inspired more people than you could ever imagine.

Signed,
